INDIA’S ONE Day International (ODI) team’s skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Mahi) has decided to add some more certificates to his kitty as he is now all set to pursue his Bachelors’ degree and become a graduate. Dhoni has sought admission at St Xavier’s College, Ranchi, his home town, through the sports quota. He desires a Bachelors degree in commerce and later on plans to get Masters in business administration.
Dhoni got enrolled for the Bachelors degree in commerce in the academic year beginning from August, 2008. However, due to the delay in his admission, there were speculations that he may not be able to get admission in this academic year, but the news of his getting admission to the college has been confirmed by none other than the vice-chancellor of the university.
Dhoni, who has passed higher secondary, approached the college in Ranchi to fulfill his long awaited desire of becoming a graduate, which he was not able to do because of his busy cricketing career. Now, having tackled the best bowlers in the world and mastering his troops to numerous victories, the dynamic captain from Ranchi wants to add another feather to his illustrious persona by becoming a graduate.
However, Dhoni’s decision to pursue graduation from St Xavier’s College has disappointed teachers and students of his previous college, Gossener College, where he had enrolled for a Bachelor’s course in commerce in 1999, but has decided to now shift academic venue. St Xavier’s College had been in news ever since Dhoni had expressed his wish to study in his favorite college some time back. However, it is believed that though Dhoni has taken admission in St Xavier’s, he may be taking his exams from Chennai, as he will be in Chennai captaining the Chennai IPL team.
Dhoni did his schooling from DAV Shayamli, but after cricket took over in his life and he had no time to give a second thought to his studies. He had to leave his studies to play cricket for his state and India A before being called to don the national colours. Now, having his name well established in Indian cricket, Dhoni seems set to fulfill the desire of being called a graduate.
The news of Dhoni seeking admission to St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi was a matter of delight for the institute. Faculty and students alike are elated at Dhoni’s decision to enroll at their college, which is bound to boost the popularity of the institute. Students are particularly ecstatic about having Dhoni as their batch mate whom they had revered for his deeds on cricket grounds. The students are eagerly looking forward to welcome on board their celebrity colleague.
It was a welcome decision on part of Dhoni, which is being praised even by the teachers of the institute. The teachers are happy that the Indian skipper is setting the right precedent and being a good role model for youngsters to follow. They feel that Dhoni’s step would certainly inspire the youth to go for studies at all cost.
