Mizoram dances away to glory
A spectacular show of the famous Mizo bamboo dance, performed by over ten thousand dancers, created history at Aizawl and entered the Guinness record book.
AFTER THE stupendous show by Meghalaya through the drum and the guitar to script history, it was Mizoram’s turn on March 12, 2010 to create history. Sheer grit, determination and show of colourful integrity by exactly 10,736 dancers wrote a new Guinness record of the traditional Mizo bamboo dance, locally called Cheraw dance.

The dancers included 5368 boys and an equal number of girls. The main ensemble was held at the Assam Rifles Ground in the heart of Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram with 4096 dancers, while the rest were spread across the main road stretching over 3 km. It was a riot of colours and rhythm as these enthusiastic dancers began their feat at around 2 p m on Friday afternoon under the watchful eyes of Guinness Book of Records adjudicator, Lucia Sinigagliesi.

These record numbers of dancers created perfect harmony of rhythm and balance for exactly eight minutes to create history for their state. Local support was spectacular as thousands of overwhelming onlookers cheered the participants, boosting their morale. Government patronage poured in to make this event a grand success as it needed substantial funds for the colourful costumes and other technical support.

Traditionally Cheraw dance was performed in olden times as a solemn prayer for the departed soul of a mother who dies at child birth to get a place in heaven. But nowadays, the dance is performed on any occasion. It is one of the main events that showcase the colourful and rhythmic way of Mizo life.
Hope this event will boost the tourism potential of the state which was the noble intention behind making the event became a reality.
