Mob burns truck driver alive
Lynching has not been uncommon in Bengal, especially during the Left Front’s tenure. But the medieval barbarity that was witnessed on Wednesday, where a truck driver was burnt alive after he ran over a boy, has sent shock waves through the state.
BARBARIC DISPLAY of mob fury saw a truck driver set on fire after his vehicle ran over a Class VI student in Asansol, West Bengal. The livid mob seized the driver after the accident, trussed him to a tree, poured kerosene on him and set him ablaze on Wednesday. The police arrested 23 people in connection with the killing on Thursday. Lynching which Bengal has witnessed off and on in 30 years of Marxist rule seems to be back.

Truck drivers in Asansol went on a strike in protest against the gruesome murder and demanded security. Staging demonstrations they set up road blocks at several places. The agitators have demanded exemplary punishment for all those responsible for killing the driver. The ghastly incident occurred after the school boy was run over near Basti More in Asansol.
At around 11 am, 13-year-old Bikash Bauri, a class VI student of Santadangal High School, was returning home on a bicycle when a truck carrying coal hit him. The boy died on the spot. The truck was speeding away when it stopped, probably due to a mechanical snag. The driver and his helper jumped off and began to run with villagers taking up the chase.

Singh ducked into a house and huddled for an hour. When he came out thinking the coast was clear the mob saw him and caught up with him. They tied him to a tree and began kicking and beating him with lathis. The frenzied mob then slashed him with choppers and knives. The leaders of the infuriated crowd got hold of kerosene and doused him and set him on fire.
The driver, Abodh Kishore Singh, pleaded for mercy but there was no helping hand. Several hundreds villagers watched the gruesome scene. The police arrived an hour late. He was rushed Asansol sub-divisional hospital and then to a Kolkata nursing home on Wednesday night. He succumbed early this morning.
Shocking footage of the barbarism was beamed by television channels generating revulsion and anger.
