FROM TODAY Night (November 30), millions of phones without Unique Identification nimbers (IMEI Code) will be stop ringing.
As the deadline by the Govenment of India to the operators to block calls to such devices on security concerns is expiring today.
The 15 – digit international Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) Number helps security agencies trace calls made from and received on handsets and these can be seen and identified by pressing the code (*#06#). Automatically the IMEI Number will be seen in your Mobile set if not then call the operators.
The numbers which represent the manufactuer`s name and type of phone is automatically registered with the Mobile Service Provider as soon as the phone is activated.
For security reasons and in the wake of increased threat perception from terrorists, the department of telephone had asked operators not to allow calls to be completed on the handsets without the IMEI number from November 30th night onwards.
More than three crore mobile handsets are without IMEI at present, according to a survey and will stop ringing from today night.
However, a large number of users are yet to avail the number, operators feel the deadline should be extended. As per the earlier estimates, over 25 million handsets are in circulation without IMEI numbers.
A cellular operator, who does not wish to be identified said, "Why are subscribers being penalised? They had purchased handsets from markets without knowing any such clause.
However, a large number of users are yet to avail the number, operators feel the deadline should be extended.
