Money Omnipresent in Bollywood. Where is good entertainment?
The race to make it to the box office has changed to make it to the 100 crore benchmark in Bollywood these days. Is Bollywood forgetting its destiny?
FILMS LIKE Bodyguard, Dabangg, Singham and the likes make you wonder whether Bollywood has forgotten its true purpose; that of entertaining people and not solely of making money.

With audience who are happy to see anything Salman does on silver screen, economy seems to be the only thing on the mind of the film makers. And who can blame them with films like Golmaal, Singham and Bodyguard. Movies these days feel a need to reach the 100 crore bar as soon as possible. With Bodyguard making 21 crore on the very first day, Bollywood is compromising on the substance of the films.

What happened to the substance that comes with making films? The satisfaction of putting up something simply splendid within the allocated 3 hours? Ashim, a photo journalist said, “Comedies do not require substance and since these days comedies are in vogue and they are selling so it is always smart to make a comedy.”

The trend of remaking some other language film is also hampering the substance at large as people are not thinking for themselves. Not only themes, characters but these days’ films are simply copied frame by frame. If people just sit down and think of entertaining people then they are bound to come up with creative ideas like the latest film by Zoya Akhtar, “ Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara.”

When our CJ asked Kaustav Rakshit, an engineer and a film buff who watches Bollywood, Hollywood and Tamil films at large, about the declining quality of the films in Bollywood he said, “Bollywood makes bad remakes of good small budget Tamil Films. It is sad to see that in Bollywood, actors are not for the scripts but scripts are for the actors. The Indian people are so star struck that they nowadays don’t care for the substance anymore.” He also brought to light another interesting fact that in Hollywood, every character is given equal screen space in the film but in Bollywood the leads encompass the entire screen space.

Writing off Bollywood completely would be an injustice as there are people who are concerned about the film aesthetics, directing and people who want to tell a wonderful story. To quote few examples would be Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish. Another emerging trend is small budget Bollywood movie like Udaan, which is given no importance in India until and unless they are recognised in some foreign film festival.

What happened to the intelligent audience who understood films? Aren’t we losing out on good entertainment by running after money? Filmmakers think about it. It is important to make mindless commercial films for the people who don’t want to use their head in the theatre but what about the people who do want to use them. Where is entertainment for them?
