MONKEY MENACE has increased in the recent past in the cities. Monkeys often ransack homes and bite people in residential colonies. The large-scale urbanisation and industrialisation is eating into the green cover that happens to be the home for monkeys. The number of monkeys straying into urban areas is on the rise. Over the last, the shrinking natural habitat has saddled the city. So far, relocating them outside the city has been a colossal failure.

Monkey menace is big problem everywhere and big towns/cities are worst affected. Monkeys have a religious place in the Hindu dominating society. Fighting monkeys is becoming difficult due to opposition from the civil society. In given parameters, administration also finds it difficult to do away with the monkeys who are caught and transported in other cities or states.

Municipal corporations and state governments are also responsible for increasing the number of monkeys.

Builders, society managements, resident welfare associations and localites are so disturbed that they have started hiring langurs to scare away the monkeys. This too has failed to scare the monkeys away. A team of monkey catchers specialist may also be helpful. Government and RWAs may draw some action points including not to give food articles and shelters to monkeys etc. These action points and tips covering dos and don’ts in a leaflet or a book may be distributed in public for their awareness as to how to fight the increasing monkey menace. Schools may also be approached to create awareness amongst the children.

Some hoardings and notice boards giving tips to fight the monkey menace may also be displayed near the temples and at some important points. Sterilisation will not be acceptable to the majority of the people. Therefore, government should not take steps to sterlise monkeys, who are also independent creature of God.
