More reforms could help India reach the goal of becoming an economic powerhouse sooner
Recently, 'second generation reforms' made headlines in the press. Noted economist Mr. Raghura Rajan had called for second generation reforms in India, which could put a stop to the slowing economy and set the stage for strong growth in the next few decades.

SIMILAR VIEW was also expressed by the President of the US, Mr. Barrack Obama who had mentioned that, “There appears to be a growing consensus in India that the time may be right for another wave of economic reforms to make India more competitive in the global economy."

In this regard it is important to take note of the twin issues highlighted by Mr. C. Rangarajan, Chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Adisory Council: these are : (a) Land acquisiton and (b) enrivonmental clearance. Many projects under the first generation of reforms are still held up due to these reasons.  Therefore, if the country needs more and more reforms, then these twin issues need to be addressed first before welcoming more reforms.

Based on these views, it can be safely concluded that reforms and more reforms could be the best option for sustaining the economic growth in the country. Mr. Obama also lauded India for successfully lifting millions and millions of people from the poverty line. This was made possible mainly due to the first generation of reforms.

Emerging countries like India can also stand to gain once the current European economic issue takes a turn for the better. A debate should be initiated whether the single currency euro enjoyed by many european countries if limited to a select few countries while returning to the old format of each country having its own currency may help in restoring the european economy towards progress. It is seen in the past that both the US and Europe are liberal spenders once their economy are in good shape which has helped emerging economies like China, Brazil, India to grow faster.

I do not understand that mere becoming the economic power house will solve the basic problems of India?

At a time when the govt. doesnt know how to manage the current crisis of slowing economy, long term reforms look like a wishful thinking.

Land Acquisition and Environmental Clearance sounds like two very heavy tasks. The first itself will take ages to sort out. Since the topography of the states vary so widely - there is very little scope of a uniform bill. What looks good is Haryana's rugged soil may not look good in West Bengal's fertile land. Secondly, the environment clearance is a big time corrupted area. There is no fixed standards and that allows the babus to make money. So obviously there will be many within the govt. who will not like any reform to come through in this sector. The entire thing looks like another good idea that will stay on paper

The overall idea is nice. However we need a strong govt. to push those reforms. At the moment the current govt. is plagued by various other issues like scams, scandals, corruption. They do not want to risk it much. Not doing anything still looks like a safer bet than doing the wrong thing before 2014 elections.
