Mormon Presidential candidate Mitt Romney gathers steam
Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is plagued by controversies, which are being planted by his rivals in opposition. With his religion being questioned, is the United States really tolerant in choosing its leaders?

HOW MANY of us remember Barack Obama’s inaugural speech when he took to the office of being the 44th President of the United States of America? Not many. In his inaugural speech in 2009, Obama had stated that America is a nation of Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and non-believers.

Has religion always been a bone of contention when it comes to Presidential elections in the United States? Obama stoked controversy for his middle name, Hussien. Everyone knows Americans had developed a grudge against Muslims because of the infamous World Trade Centre catastrophe.

However, the ghosts of religion seem to have made a comeback with their latest target being the potential Republican presidential candidate for the 2012 elections, Mitt Romney. An evangelical pastor in the United States decries Romney’s candidature as he says that he is not a Christian but a ‘Mormon’. The pastors' claims have already garnered a lot of negative criticism, but the paparazzi, fed by the opposition, now have enough substance to thwart Romney’s chances of being the 45th President of the United States of America.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts from January 2, 2003 to January 4, 2007 with his strong acumen in the area of business seems a strong candidate to drag the struggling US economy. out of despair The Republican candidate, with his balanced understanding of politics and business has a lot of hopes pinned on him, and if pitched against Democrat Obama, he can create a lot of trouble for the latter in the long run.

Undoubtedly, Romney who also comes with a rich political background has many supporters as well within the American political circuit who want him to be prepared to win the battle in order to win the war. Robert Bennett, a former Republican governor of Utah told The Telegraph that he (Romney) has the experience, organisation and money to compete beyond the early states where he is favoured. Big name endorsers and donors who have been waiting on the sidelines to see who will be the winner are now showing up in Romney's camp. The fact that the Obama campaign is bashing Romney at every opportunity shows that they also think he will be the Republican nominee. Anything can still happen, but, at the moment, for Romney, the race is his for him to lose.
