Majority of patients having asthma, which is not under control, have the impression that their condition is not serious enough. Since Winter is a season when many asthma cases are reported, once should be careful in not aggravating one's condition by not taking one's condition seriously.
TWO-THIRDS of patients having uncontrolled asthma believe that their disease is well under control said Padmashri & Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President, Heart Care Foundation of India. It must also be noted that patients having asthma taking regular and normal medication can live a regular life and also at the same time bring down instances of complications in their condition.
It is seen that asthmatics in an uncontrolled state, often report complications in the right side of the heart due to continuous lack of oxygen in the blood.
Dr. Eric van Ganse, of University of Lyon, France, in a research study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, examined 1,048 subjects with inadequate asthma control. When asked how they would rate their asthma control over the past 14 days, over 69 percent considered themselves to be completely or well controlled. Failure to perceive inadequate asthma control was more likely to be found in patients between the ages of 41 and 50 years.
The reasons are:
1. Most patients of asthma fail to perceive their level of disease control and with an uncontrolled state they often feel that their asthma is pretty much under control.
2. In case of severe asthma, low levels of blood oxygen levels may impair a the patient's ability to get to know his or her level of difficulty in breathing.
3. The idea of asthma control is not very well by patients of asthma.
4. Asthma, which is between mild to moderate, comes in the way of activities of a person who suffers from asthma. But over a period of time, asthma patients come to realize their boundaries of physical exertion and mobitilty.
