Mother's Day: Celebration of motherhood
Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May and this year, it falls on May 13 to honour mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds, familial relationship and the contribution of mothers in society.

Mother's Day is time to thank and express love for one's mother along with making her feel special.

The US-market driven Mother's Day has been assimilated into Indian society and is marked by the Mother's Day greeting cards, gifts, bouquets and celebrations in market places.

The market-driven Day has been criticized for having become too commercialized. I feel that, on this day, it is necessary to revisit the concept of motherhood instead of celebrating it in a ritualistic manner or as a marketed event. The concept of motherhood is more related to ideal mother, angel mother or 'as a mother ought to be' beyond the biological relationship with the off-springs.

According to s Carol Bradley Bursack, "To me, the definition of motherhood is someone who nurtures. Yes, carrying a child in your womb for months and then giving birth creates a lifelong bond that cannot be broken, even by separation. However, it's the nurturing of a child throughout life that, to me, represents motherhood."

Describing a true mother's love for her child, Helen Rice says, "A mother's love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking."

M: Manages home and keeps it together

O: Owes humanity its continuance to her

T: Thinks and wishes well for the future of her children

H: Her heart is filled with affection, love and forgiveness.

E: Ease at multi-tasking

R: Right of every women is motherhood
