Mother's Day: Know and celebrate motherhood
Today, on May 8, in most parts of the world including India, Mother's Day is being observed to celebrate and honour motherhood and the influence of mothers on children, families and society.

It is necessary to revisit the concept of motherhood instead of celebrating it in a ritualistic manner or as a marketed event. The concept of motherhood is more related to ideal mother, angel mother or 'as a mother ought to be' beyond the biological relationship with the off-springs.

Motherhood stands for the state of being with the true qualities or spirit of a mother. In other words, motherhood is the state or experience of having and nurturing or raising a child. As Carol Bradley Bursack, an expert and care consultant puts it nicely, "To me, the definition of motherhood is someone who nurtures. Yes, carrying a child in your womb for months and then giving birth creates a lifelong bond that cannot be broken, even by separation. However, it's the nurturing of a child throughout life that, to me, represents motherhood."

According to Bursack, it is nurturing presence for children that symbolized motherhood, whether that nurturing is provided by the birth mother or any other care-giver.

Equating a mother with new birth of a woman with 'motherhood' Osho says, "The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new."

Abraham Lincoln had once remarked, "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."

Since motherhood can understand what a child does not say and make an ounce of mother worth a pound of clergy, as a Spanish proverb puts it.  The same thought is endorsed by James Russell Lowell when he says that the best academy is a mother's knee.

Here are some choicest quotes on motherhood.

  • The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world. – William Ross Wallace
