Mother's Day to be celebrated on May 12 this year
On May 12, the second Sunday of May, the Mother's Day is going to be observed to honour motherhood and celebrate the influence and contribution of mothers on children, families and society.

Since schools closed for summer vacation on May 9, many institutions celebrated Mother's Day on the last working day. The Mother' Day was celebrated at  in SPS Jaittu, Bathinda, in which, students made the formation of Maa in Hindi, informed the school functionary TD Garg via Facebook with a picture as shown in the inset.

It is necessary to revisit the concept of motherhood instead of celebrating it in a ritualistic manner or as a marketed event. The concept of motherhood is more related to ideal mother, angel mother or 'as a mother ought to be' beyond the biological relationship with the off-springs, I had written in a post earlier.

As Carol Bradley Bursack puts it aptly, "To me, the definition of motherhood is someone who nurtures. Yes, carrying a child in your womb for months and then giving birth creates a lifelong bond that cannot be broken, even by separation. However, it's the nurturing of a child throughout life that, to me, represents motherhood."

Equating a mother with new birth of a woman with 'motherhood' Osho says, "The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new."

Mother is also regarded as the first teacher of a child. James Russell Lowell is right when he says that the best academy is a mother's knee.

Here are some choicest quotes on motherhood.

AA mother's love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking. – Helen Rice

God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. – Jewish Proverb

The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. – Honore de Balzac

Here is my ABC verse on motherhood: A: An attitude and kind bonding - not a mere biological relationship / B: Bringing up, nurturing and nursing the future generations /  D: Divinity personified for the holiest service to the mankind / C: Called upon to selflessly meet the valuable emotional needs of the family / E: Evolved to multitasking faster than men.
