Mother's Day to be observed on May 18
Each year, the Mother's Day is celebrated on second Sunday of May (May 8, this year) for paying tribute to mothers for all their nurturing values, love and support to children and society.

MOTHER'S DAY is going to be celebrated all over the world on 8th May this year. Each year, the day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May for paying tribute to mothers. The more important is expression of the feelings of gratitude for observing the day and give due recognition tribute to mothers for all their nurturance, love and support to children.

For initiating the Mother's Day in the United States in the year 1870, the credit is given to Julia Ward Howe with the belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies. She even came out with the "Mother's Day Proclamation" highlighting the contribution of mothers to their families and the society at large.

In 1912, Anna Jarvis created the Mother's Day International Association urging each family to honour their mother. Recently, the observance of Mother's Day has become popular in urban India for giving gifts to mothers and honouring them.

In the West, carnations have come to be associated with Mother's Day. The tradition is that the white or red carnations are supposed to represented affection, selflessness and love.

In admiration for mothers Buddha has said, "As a mother, even at the risk of her own life, loves and protects her child, so let a man cultivate love without measure toward the whole world."

Here are five choicest quotes depicting the glory of motherhood.

  • A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. - Washington Irving
  • All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her. -George Washington
  • All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. -Abraham Lincoln
  • No gift to your mother can ever equal her gift to you - life. - Anonymous
  • That best academy, a mother's knee. James Russell Lowell.
