MS Dhoni- Still a first choice for millions
MS Dhoni, the dynamic Indian captain, has certainly become the target of every one after the recent poor performance of team India when they lost series against England 3-1. Somehow in cricket, if anyone fails to deliver as per expectations every time, he is severely criticized without even considering his previous glorious contributions.

Unfortunately, our wonderful captain MS Dhoni is passing through the same sad phase nowadays and the most pinching fact remains that as an individual batsman, he has given a worthwhile contribution. It is really amazing that for gross failure of almost the entire batting line, he is being reprimanded by critics for no fault of him.

I just intend to underline for information of fans the very fact that during the year 2013, the whole world had praised MS Dhoni for many consecutive series wins, in West Indies, Australia and England. All of the wins were achieved by MS Dhoni with comparatively young and new cricketers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

It means that as far as he was winning, Dhoni was lauded as a talented skipper. But now for the failure of others, Dhoni is being projected as a villain. What a strange turnaround! It means that amongst all cricket playing nations, the benchmarks set in India perhaps happen to be the most tough ones. Does it not mean that as the follower of this beautiful game, we are not ready to face losing any encounter?

So another fundamental question which needs to be answered is that how come Dhoni is being blamed for all the recent defeats? The basics of the game clearly define that this is a team effort which leads to winning or losing any match.

I strongly believe that any captain has a limited role which is confined to utilizing his resources in the most optimum manner. At the most he can tender his valuable advice to his fellow players and try to infuse confidence and fighting spirit. MS Dhoni has always led by coming upfront and he is one of the best finishers in the world.

But when batsmen do not score, bowlers do not take wickets, fielders keep on dropping the important catches and the matches are being played on fast tracks like England, how is the captain held responsible? If batsmen are adopting faulty techniques, is the captain liable? If their shot selection is poor what a captain can do? If bowlers bowl short and wide, should we blame the skipper?

For heaven's sake, he is the same talented captain who led us to victory in one World Cup and one World T20. Also, he is the one who made us number 1 in Tests. How can we tend to forget the numerous records under his belt?

He possesses the qualities of a true leader who very often sets his own targets. Very often, he leads by example. Not only is he among the best finishers, but as a wicket keeper, he has got more than 300 dismissals to his credit! Also, the list of his personal records is quite big and impressive. A glimpse of his stats speaks for him. This 33 year old man has got a fairly good test match performance as clearly evident:

Mat        Inns       NO         Runs      HS           Ave        BF           SR

88           140         15         4808      224           38.46     8132       59.12

100s         50s         4s            6s

6              33           535         78

On a personal note, I am a big admirer of MSD who strongly believes that billions of his fans have always stood by him through good and bad phases. And in this time of crisis, millions are standing firmly behind him in a more committed manner.

We all love you captain and do hope you emerge in a more committed way and will provide us another proud moment of lifting the world cup in year 2015.
