'Mulayam Singh Yadav's pro-rapist remark a patriarchal and anti-woman statement'
A group of professors, and women's rights activists has opposed Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's pro-rapist remark while terming it as anti-woman, patriarchal and feudal statement.

The group also condemned SP leader Abu Azmi for his remark against women in a press statement issued on behalf of Prof Ranjana Kakkar, Prof Nisha Srivastava, Prof. Rajul Mathur of Allahabad University, Dr. Nidhi Misra and Padma Singh of Stree Mukti Sangathan, Advocate Deeba Siddiqui, Dhanpati Devi, Chandrawati Nishad and Vandana Nishad of Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan and Utpala of Gharelu Kamgar Mahila Sangathan;

The statement said that the views of SP leaders exposed their downright patriarchal mindset and also explained the reason why the large number of Rape accused during the Muzaffarnagar riots are moving free.

"They (Singh and Azmi) also reveal double standards of this party. Their chief is opposing Death Penalty for Rape accused but Abu Azmi is advocating Death Penalty for the Rape survivors also," said the group.

The press statement further said, "SP leaders views exposes the hatred of such rulers towards the laws forced by brave struggles of ordinary people. Women's movements have always opposed Death Penalty and insisted on guarantee of punishment as the main issue. These utterances of SP leaders are typical of misogynist mindset to oppose laws providing for democratic rights and justice to women in the name of their misuse."

The group of professors and women activists said that this attitude of the Samajwadi Party was revealed in the charge sheets filed by the SP Government in two cases of Mujaffarnagar Gang Rape in which they revealed the names of the victims and distributed them to the media.

"We strongly criticize these views of S.P. Leaders. These are extremely shameful statements coming from senior leaders who are part of our governance coming 67 years after so called building of modern India," said the group of professors and women activists.
