Mumbai martyrs recommended for Ashoka Chakra
12 Mumbai policemen, who died in the 26/11 Mumbai attack, are likely to be bestowed upon with Ashoka Chakra. Mumbai police recommended the names of 12 officials to the home ministry and the final decision would be taken by a committee
ASHOKA CHAKRA- the highest gallantry award, away from the battlefield is likely to be bestowed upon 12 Mumbai policemen, who made the supreme sacrifice, while trying to save people from terror onslaught on November 26.


Mumbai police said that it has recommended the names of 12 officials to the home ministry and the final decision in this regard would be taken by a committee. Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, senior officials Ashok Kamte and inspector Vijay Salaskar are also in the list.


Four other policemen from different branches are also likely to be recommended for the Ashoka Chakra. Interestingly, reports from Mumbai alluded to pressure being exerted by certain officials, who are interested in getting a medal for 26/11.


The grapevine is that two senior officials have even managed to get recommendations for lesser awards. One of them claims to have engaged the terrorists at the Taj, while the other is said to have exchanged fire with them at the Oberoi.


Around 36 police officials are in line to receive the gallantry awards after their names were recommended for police medal for gallantry. Some officials from the bomb disposal and detection squad are also likely to be recommended for the police medal for gallantry.
