THERE IS a strong belief that movies always portray the bitter reality of our lives. Recently, Fashion, a Madhur Bhandarkar movie came on the big screen starring Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut. This film highlighted the story that is similar to the life of one-time super model, Geetanjali Nagpal, who was found, rumpled and incoherent, wandering on the streets of Delhi last year.
On January 18, this year, 21-year-old model, Renu Rathi was found lying without food and water on the street outside her flat in Bandra (West) locality of Mumbai. As she could not pay the rent for her flat the landlord had thrown her out, along with all her belongings. She is from Gurgaon and belongs to a rich and prestigious family. Sources said that she broke all her relations with her parents as they did not want her to go to Mumbai. She refused any short of help from her own parents. For two years she tried her luck in the Hindi movies, but got nothing. Frustrated with her struggle she started smoking and got addicted to drugs. As the drama was being enacted outside Rathi’s apartment, the model kept saying, “I want Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt to cast me in their films. Even a small role would do.” She also called her so called boy-friend, Vishal Parikshit, who works with director Mohit Suri and said, “I hate you” and “I do not want you to interfere in my life.” Currently, police officials from Khar police station have permitted Rathi to be taken to a rehabilitation centre for treatment. Every day hundreds of people come to this glamorous city in the hope of making it big. Only a few get the desired success and others disappear somewhere in the dark. One should be very careful and clear about the realities before taking a chance with the unending world of glamour.
