Mumbai to host conference on New Trends in Humanities, Gender and Cultural Studies
Two-Day Interdisciplinary International Conference on "New Trends in Humanities, Gender and Cultural Studies" is going to be organized by jointly by SNDT College of Arts and SCB College of Commerce and Science for Women, Mumbai in collaboration with M.G.E. & W. Society's Centre for Humanities & Cultural Studies on 4th and 5th March, 2015 at the Patkar Hall, SNDT University, Mumbai.

According to conference organizers, the academic discipline of humanities studies human culture and brings ancient and modern languages, literatures, philosophy, religions, and visual and performing arts such as music and theatre in its fold and it requires interdisciplinary approach of research to unify various constituent knowledge areas.

The importance of the conference has be projected through a quote attributed to American Academy of Arts & Sciences, which goes as follows: "As we strive to create a more civil public discourse, a more adaptable and creative workforce, and a more secure nation, the humanities and social sciences are the heart of the mater, the keeper of the republic - a source of national memory and civic vigor, cultural understanding and communication, individual fulfillment and the ideals we hold in common. They are critical to a democratic society and they require our support."

Another high point of the conference is the inclusion of gender related research studies in the conference. The organizers view the term "gender" as social and cultural constructions of masculinities and femininities, not to the state of being male or female in its entirety.

"Gender studies are a field of interdisciplinary study and academic field devoted to gender identify and gendered representation as central categories of analysis. This field includes women's studies (concerning women, feminism, gender, and politics), men's studies, and LGBT studies," clarify the conference organizers.

For the conference, the research papers in the areas of Languages and Literatures; Literary & critical theories; Creative writing and Translation; Social studies; International Relations; Gender Studies; Law, Religion, Philosophy and Anthropology; Music, Visual Art, Theatre and Film and Media Studies; Nation, Race, Class and Ethnic Studies, etc. have been invited. There will be panel discussions and special talks on various topics during the conference.
