It is a great piece of news for Mumbai party animals as Bombay High Court today gave permission to celebrate New Year's Eve in pubs and restaurants till 5 am. The High court ruled out the deadline set by the Mumbai police to party till 1:30 am only, which was said to be done in the interest of women's safety.
The case was taken to the court by owners of pubs and restaurants in Mumbai and they won their case today. The single judge bench of Justice G.S. Patel took up the case and rejected the argument saying, “Did the Shakti Mills gang-rape case happen on New Year's Eve?”
The police in their defense stated that there are concerns about terror attacks also, by the seven suspects, who are missing from a jail in Madhya Pradesh. But the judge didn't buy that, and said, “Threat perception to the city will be there all the time. Not just on December 31,” as reported by NDTV.
Aditya Thackeray, the 23-year-old leader of Shiv Sena tweeted, “The point is, curtailing legal celebrations will only give rise to hidden ones that might not be in the best spirit of the society.” Thackery was also against Mumbai Police curfew time of 1:30 am.
After the decision was taken by the Bombay High Court, Shobhaa De tweeted saying, “Heralding a new dawn. Well done HC. Mumbai can party on till 5 a.m. But let's not make it hard on our overworked cops. Behave, children!”
