GANDHIGIRI CAME out with torrents of glory by sweeping out the 54th National Awards of 2006 – as ’Lage Raho Munnabhai’ hoisted the flag of records by being awarded the National Award in the best popular movie category in 2006; the only sequel to have accomplished this part. The same feat was presented to the prequel, ’Munnabhai MBBS’ in 2003.

The awards were announced on June 10 (Tuesday).

However, the list of awards for the sequel seemed to augment to newer heights – the jury led by Buddhadeb Dasgupta groomed the honours of best lyrics given to Swanand Kirkire; the best screenplay to the trio of Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi; the best supporting actor for Dilip Prabhavalkar, who played Mahatma Gandhi’s role in ’Lage Raho Munnabhai’. Prabhavalkar was even presented an award for a Marathi film ’Shervi’, where he played the character of a compassionate clerk.

The Punjabi movie ’Waris Shah-Ishq Da Waris’ was also amidst the award winning line-ups, as it was prized with four distinct awards for the best film in Punjabi – best art director award was given to Rasheed Rangrez; best costume designer was given to Manjit Mann and the best male playback singer to Gurdas Mann. The director of the movie, Manoj Punj, passed away after the movie’s release in 2006.

Among the other Hindi movies, Madhur Bhandarkar won the award for the best director for his film ’Traffic Signal’; and ’Khosla ka Ghosla’ made room for the best Hindi movie in 2006.

’Kabul Express’ and Malayalam movie ’Ekantham’ shared the success for their direction in the debuted format. Konkana Sen Sharma clinched the best supporting actress for her performance in ’Omkara’, and was also honoured with the special jury award for being an outstanding film synergising, an international treatment with a responsibility to handle with due respect and pride. Yatra took hold of the best cinematography, which was awarded to director Gautam Ghose.

The best film award was bagged by the Priyanandanan directed ’Pulijanmam’, a Malayalam movie. The ‘old hand’ Soumitra Chatterjee had his hands on the best actor award for ’Podokkhep’, while Priyamani – a Tamil actress – won the best actress award for ’Paruthi Veeran’.

Arti Anklekar Tikekar, a renowned vocalist was awarded the best female playback singer for the Konkani movie ’Antarnad’; while the same movie fetched the best music director award to Ashok Patki; and also the best feature film in Konkani. Divyya Chaphadkar was brought under the limelight for being showcased with the best child artist award, which outwitted the celebrity mother’s performance.

As for the English performances, Amol Palekar’s ’Quest’ – which dealt with issues of sexuality – was counted as the best movie in English.

The Nargis Dutt award for the best feature film on national integration was awarded to Kannada film, ’Kallarli Huvag’. However, the Dada Saheb Phalke award for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema was left devoid of any candidates.
