HISTORY WAS created at the Galle International Stadium when ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan claimed his 800th wicket as the Indians were packed for 338 in their second innings against Sri Lanka today. Muttiah achieved this feat by dismissing Indian batsman Pragyan Ojha thus allowing him to end his career with 800 test wickets, a feat unsurpassed by any one in world cricket . Incidentally, this is Muralitharan's final test match appearance.
After dismissing Tendulkar during the 3rd day of the first innings, Muralitharan achieved this path record by claiming the wickets of Yuvraj Singh (52), skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33), Pragyan Ojha and Abhimanyu Mithun. After bowling out the Indians in second inning, Sri Lanka now needs 95 runs to win the test match at Galle and lead 1-0 in the three match test series.
Muttiah Muralitharan was born on April 17, 1972 and is regarded as one of the best bowlers in the cricketing history. His style of bowling was questioned on various occasions but cricket's governing body, International Cricket Council (ICC) cleared him twice in 1996 and 1999.
