Muslim parties join UP Congress
In a major blow to Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and the Mayawati-led BSP in UP, Muslim voters in the State have decided to back the Congress. The PDF merged with the Indian National Congress on August 8.
IN A major blow to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s plans to revive his sagging Samajwadi Party and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party in UP, Muslim voters in the State have decided to back the Congress. The Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF) earlier known as the All India Muslim Forum which is the first and largest Muslim political party in Uttar Pradesh, officially joined the Indian National Congress at a well-attended gathering at Gandhi Bhavan. Over 250 workers of the PDF accompanied by thousands of supporters joined the Congress Party in the presence of Rita Bahuguna Joshi, UPCC President, and several senior Congress leaders like former Chief Minister Ram Naresh Yadav and former Home Minister Swaroop Kumari Bakshi, in the jam-packed Gandhi Bhawan Hall on the afternoon of Saturday, August 8.

Led by PDF Party President Salahuddin Khan and General Secretary Naseem Khan, 251 party workers took membership of the Congress Party. The party workers include National Joint Secretary Ajit Chak and State President Abdul Kalam Khan. Several other prominent members include Mohammad Farukh, Rais Ahmad, Mohd Asif, Aamir Khan, Dr Mujib, Ibad Ahmad, Sanjay Mishra, Qurban Ali, Irshad Ahmad Ansari, Mustafa Khan, Shujauddin Khan, Nizammuddin, Haji Manjoor Ahmad, Masood Akhtar, Riaz Quereshi, Nusrat Ali, Mohammad Laik, Keshav Pandey and Mohammad Sultan, to name a few.

Party spokesperson and Lucknow District President Rais Ahmad said that the PDF had always stood for the downtrodden, the weaker sections and minorities and for the democratic rights of the citizen. The decision to join the Congress was taken by Salahuddin Khan with the consent of the party office bearers and workers since it appeared to them that the Congress under Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were fighting for strengthening secularism and democracy in the State.

According to National General Secretary Naseem Khan, the PDF has launched several agitations in Uttar Pradesh and several jail bharo andolans in which thousands of party workers courted arrest. The party has to its credit several agitations in the State. It successful launched an agitation against the evil of lottery in the State. It has also fought for the end of TADA in Uttar Pradesh and for job reservations for backward Muslims in the State.

The PDF was earlier known as the All India Muslim Forum which was launched after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, by the then Party President Nehaluddin Ahmad under whom the party campaigned for the cause of Muslims in the state. In 2006, the party felt the need to widen the party base and make it representative of all downtrodden sections in Uttar Pradesh. A decision was taken to change the party’s name from The All India Muslim Forum to the Peoples' Democratic Forum. The party backed several candidates in the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections and received an overwhelming response. Party spokesperson Rais Ahmad said that the merger with the Congress Party would be a shot in the arm and will help it combat communalism and promote democracy.
