Muslims in India: Have their lives changed after Modi became the Prime Minister?
Many in the minority community feared the staunch Hindutva to take over and communal harmony getting disturbed across the country if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister. The secular vs non-secular weightage got evaluated more than ever before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Now that the dust has settled and initial 100 days of the Narendra Modi sarkar are over, how the Indian Muslims feel? Are their worst fear coming true in the undercurrent of Hindutva or is the entire scepticism unfounded?

Maulana Yasoob Abbas, Spokesperson for Shia Personal Law Board

Maulana Yasoob AbbsI don't think, they are bringing up any kind of Hindutva agenda, but they are now working for the development of the country. Though there is no significant change in the lives of Muslims so far, but we are hoping for good days in future. If the nation is developing then the Muslim community will also develop along with it. We are hoping that the government will work for good and work for all.

Maulana Syed Arshad Madani, National President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind

Maulana Syed Arshad MadaniTill now all is well. There is nothing to substantiate that BJP wants to bring its Hindutva agenda up. But I think this silence is the reason behind the difference between BJP, RSS and the Prime Minister. But we can't say this clearly. Though there were stray comments the agenda of Hindutva has not seen a forceful implementation from BJP or RSS and I think Narendra Modi is to be credited for that. He doesn't seem to be interested in bringing up that agenda. Muslims are afraid of RSS and BJP and we are not afraid of Modi. If the prime minister follows the BJP's agenda, then it will harm the country.

Maulana Abdul Hameed Nomani, Secretary of Jamiat-e Ulema-e Hind

Maulana Abdul Hameed NomaniModi individually has done nothing but ministers under him and others have brought up the agenda of Hindutva. So even though Modi personally remains clean on this issue of Hindutva in his last 100 days of Prime Ministership, his minsters have time and again brought up the topic. Though many muslims like Modi for his work, they are a little confused about his personality at the moment. He has done or said nothing publicly to discourage his ministers who are disturbing the communal harmony. So it seems that Modi is supporting all this silently.

As of now, there are no changes in the condition of Muslim community. But the doubts related to communal harmony and security has increased. If you see in Maharashtra, Western UP, and Jharkhand these people are creating an issue of Love Jihad and Hindutva. It seems that the issue is taking a wrong track. You will never know when this spiral into another communal violence. The Prime Minister should come ahead and discourage such discussions in public else it projects as 'now its our government so we can do anything' from the Hindu radicals.

That said, we are happy about Modi being successful in bringing up the economy and in creating friendly relations with SAARC nations, except Pakistan and China. The Govt. is also trying to work hard on issues like inflation and corruption, which needs to be praised. But speaking strictly on the issues of Muslim security in this country, we have much more expectation from the Prime Minister than what he is doing currently.

BJP has shown its commitment to the preservation of rich culture and heritage of the minorities including Muslims and it also talks of preservation and promotion of Urdu. Now, Urdu is not a language of Muslims only. It is the language of all Indians irrespective of their religion and has been developed by taking vocabulary from Persian, Turkish, Arabic, Punjabi, Braj Bhasha, Awadhi, etc. with a Hindi grammatical structure but written in Persian script. It is very rich in poetry, literature and all other forms of writing. It has been badly neglected over the years ever since the country attained independence and should be promoted so that all lovers of this beautiful language irrespective of their religion could enjoy it. So, BJP's commitment to its preservation and promotion is a step in the right direction and would benefit not only Muslims but all lovers of Urdu language irrespective of their religion. Secondly, BJP has expressed its commitment to educate the boys and particularly the girls of minorities including the Muslims. The Muslim girls' education is suffering at present and most of the Muslim girls suffer from a lack of education. It is hoped that BJP would give special incentives to Muslims for getting their girls educated which would also help the Muslims to develop themselves and control their population as well as remove their poverty because once the girls are educated, then when they assume the role of motherhood, they would be aware of the benefits of having a small family which would be helpful in reducing the poverty also for it is due to large families that they are having that Muslims remain poor. Most importantly, the BJP has shown an intent to modernise the Madarasa education which is vital for the development of the Muslim community as well as for containing terrorism. It is a fact that most of the poor people go to Madarsas for education and only religious education is imparted in such Madarasas which combined with poverty make them prone to exploitation by the terrorists. By modernizing, science and other subjects would be taught to the Muslim students and they would then be able to get good jobs as well as become eminent scientists and technologists. BJP also has expressed its intention to strengthen cottage and small scale industry which has mostly Muslim workers. This step would help the Muslims in a big way. BJP has also shown its commitment to protecting the Waqf property and also have permanent Inter-faith Consultative machinery to remove fear from the mind of Muslims and build their trust. Now that it has come to power, BJP must see to it that it fulfils its promises made to minorities in its manifesto so that the minorities do not feel alienated or threatened. Apart from all this, it must formulate and enforce the Uniform Civil Code so that all citizens are treated as equal and particularly, the Muslim women do not suffer from gender discrimination. It must do everything in its power to abrogate article 370 of the Constitution so that J&K is treated at par with other states and brought into the mainstream of national life. BJP must take all these steps and particularly work for the development of all Indians and particularly, the Muslim minority so that is is not exploited by the Pseudo secular forces of Congress and its evil allies.
