Mystic Islam: ABC of Sufism
Sufism is the mystical Islamic belief and practice in which a follower, as a fakir or dervish, seeks and strives to find the truth of divine love through direct, personal and inner experience of God. It is more of devotional and meditative practice to ascertain the nature of God, humanity, divine love and wisdom.
Most historians hold that Sufism grew out of early Islamic asceticism to counter the increasing worldliness of Muslim community. According to Shariat, every Sufi saint has to follow the Quranic laws strictly along with spiritualizing oneself by devotion to God.

According to a woman Sufi saint, Rabia al-Adawiya, the mainspring of mysticism is love. She had once said after her divine experience, "Love of God had so absorbed me that neither love nor hate for any other things remains in my heart."

Sufism like most spiritual paths believes in letting go as a basic tenet as Khawwas while talking about Essential Sufism says "What is done for you - allow it to be done. What you must do yourself - make sure you do it."

A Sufi is detached from worldly relations, wealth, power, position and comforts and concentrates on ecstatic devotion and dedication to the will of the Almighty God.

Here is my ABC verse on Sufism.

A: Apprenticeship to perform mortification or Mujahedas
B: Being meditative and praying to attain the Divine Knowledge - Truth realization.
C: Control over his soul called 'Nafs' which starts which renunciation and self-mortification.
D: Divine Knowledge' attainable through with unflinching faith in and devotion to the Almighty
E: Evolutionary purity of mind through ecstatical devotion to God

Here are few Sufi haiku for you.

Divine knowledge is passed on
in secret, no fuss.

Sufi never does
think, hear, speak or see evil
to fathom his soul.

To be a Sufi is
To live a life of the spirit -
life of self-denial

Sufi believes in
unconditional surrender
to the will of God.

Regular prayers
austerity, humility
to become Sufi.
