THE SAMAJWADI Party (SP) has announced the name of their new candidate from the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat. The social worker and actor, Nafisa Ali will be the new SP candidate for Lucknow.

Samajwadi Party general secretary, Amar Singh announced the name of Nafisa Ali at a press conference in Lucknow, saying that “Nafisa Ali is my good and personal friend, and when I asked her whether she would contest the Lok Sabha election 2009 from Lucknow on Samajwadi Party ticket or would she like to represent a party (Congress) which has no political base in UP – she took my side”. Amar also told that Nafisa has full faith in SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's secular ideologies and is ready to contest elections on SP ticket. In the press conference the SP's former candidate Sanjay Dutt was also present and he told reporters that the name of Nafisa Ali was first taken by his wife Maanyata. Ali who is 52-years old, had earlier contested the 2004 parliamentary polls on a Congress ticket against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for the South Kolkata seat but was not able to win the seat.

Sometime back, the Lucknow seat was given to actor-turned-politician Sanjay Dutt, who was denied permission to contest the election by the Supreme Court as he was convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. Dutt was the party's star candidate for the Lucknow seat.
