IT REFERS to Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit's suggestion that a panel be set up to name metro-stations in Delhi. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had taken a welcome initiative by giving many metro-stations Hindi names like Vishwavidyalaya, Kendriya Sachivalaya, Vidhan Sabha etc at a time when there is an unhealthy trend of English dominating national language Hindi in our day-to-day life.
Initiative from government-functionaries matter a lot in propagation and use of Hindi like words like Akashvani and Doordarshan became household names ones official electronic media adopted these Hindi names. But at the same time, it was wrong on part of DMRC to name a station as unpopular ‘Yamuna Bank’ where even the common persons might confuse with the word ‘Bank’ which is otherwise used for banking companies. DMRC should change the name of ‘Yamuna Bank’ station as ‘Yamuna Paar’ or ‘Yamuna Teere’ to retain its welcome initial practice of using Hindi names for metro-stations.

This is ridiculous. Vidhan Sabha is okay as it is commonly used. Kendriya sachivalaya btw is signposted as Central Sectt in English throughout the system. Hindi by the way is NOT the national language. India has no NATIONAL lingo, go look up the constitution. Misconception due to Northie propoganda. Secondly, Yamuna Bank is often used to refer to that area, even in Hindi. And even while speaking Hindi, people say DU, not vishwavidyalaya.
