The police arrested seven other prominent faces in the CMAS in the incident which took place on Sunday - Raju Huika, Dora Nachika, Masi Sirka, Ramesh Khosla, Kumudini Dora, Debendra Behera and Satyanarayan Bangu. Other CMAS members have reportedly fled into the forests to escape the combing operation that is being carried out.
Meanwhile, the government has declared a shoot at site order against CMAS leader Nachika Linga. A fact finding team visited Narayanpatna, to enquire into the firing incident, where, according to reports, tribals who are a part of CMAS attacked a police station, armed with traditional weapons. The police officers inside opened fire on them.
The team has till now, met three persons who had received bullet injuries. A boy of 18 years received two bullet injuries in his leg, while another villager got hit in his hip, with the bullet still lodged inside his body. A few of the injured have receive some treatment. An old man had received bullet injuries in his left hand. This person was marketing dry fish near the police station.
Though there have been reports of many of these people, not coming forward to be treated, in fear of the police, this fact could not be completely established by the team. One of the members of the fact finding team reported that the villagers they had approached, had fear in their eyes. Many asked, “What should we do when the police comes to our village?”.
The team members reported that the police had not been co-operative with them, too and had even harassed them. The fact finding team also observed that the local media persons had delivered biased reports of the firing incident.
It discovered that even though on Friday, November 20, about 200 CMAS members including 100 women had come to the Narayanpatna police station to protest against harassments of tribals, the rest of the exchange was not in line with the manner in which it was reported.
They said that the CMAS had wanted to talk with the officer in charge, but could not do so. After a heated exchange, the tribals attempted to break in and the police commenced firing on them. Singanna was hit in his chest while he was walking out of the police compound Andru Nachika of Bhaliaput village received bullet injuries and fell down outside the police compound. Their bodies were left there by CMAS members and ran away from the spot.
