SPACE SHUTTLE, Atlantis is going in its last voyage on Friday at 2:20 p.m. An experienced crew of astronauts boarded the shuttle in a delivery trip to International Space Station to provide fresh batteries and extra room. The shuttle is loaded with batteries and a Russian made compartment for the space station.
More than 40,000 guests descended on the Kennedy Space Center and the surrounding area. They are eager to witness the last march. Everything is going well in the countdown, and the weather is looking favorable for the launch.
Weather forecasters were sticking with their 70 percent odds of good weather. All men, six astronauts crew waved and shook the fits as they headed to the launch pad. The 12-day mission is the last one for Atlantis, the fourth in NASA’s line of space shuttles. Only Discovery and Endeavor will remains after the Atlantis. NASA plans to end the 30-year program by the end of this year.
Atlantis rocketed into the orbit for the first time in 1985. This will be its 32nd shuttle flight overall. The crewmembers will install the compartment on the space station, and carry out spacewalk to replace six old batteries and hook up antenna and other spare parts. NASA spokesperson said it is a way to spread the message and get the public exited about space exploration, as the shuttle program winds down. As per Obama space plan, NASA is going to send astronauts to an asteroid by 2025, and into the orbit of Mars by 2035. The space station will keep operating until 2020 with the help of Russian Soyuz Rocket.
