The six astronauts have boarded the space shuttle for a 12 day trip to the International Space Station to deliver an integrated cargo carrier and a mini research module that was built by Russia.
This mission is Atlantis final and last mission after almost a quarter-century missions. Atlantis’ maiden voyage was on Oct. 3, 1985. It has been to space and back 32 times and the 132nd shuttle flight overall.
The NASA space shuttle Atlantis is loaded with fresh batteries and a Russian-built compartment for the space station. Space shuttle Atlantis mission carrying an integrated cargo carrier to deliver maintenance and assembly hardware, including spare parts for space station systems. In addition, the second in a series of new pressurized components for Russia, a Mini Research Module, will be permanently attached to the bottom port of the Zarya module.
In the 12 days mission of NASA space shuttle Atlantis, six astronauts including Piers Sellers, Steve Bowen, Michael Good and Garrett Reisman are as Mission Specialist, while Tony Antonelli is as Pilot and Ken Ham is as Commander. There is a huge crowd gathered at the Kennedy Space Center to witness Atlantis' last launch. After its return from the space station, the Atlantis space shuttle will be placed in a museum somewhere in America.
