Nation celebrates Valmiki Jayanti, PM Modi greets people
The birth anniversary of sage Valmiki was celebrated across the nation on Thursday to remember revered first poet of Sanskrit literature and author of the epic Ramayana. His birth anniversary is celebrated on Ashwin Purnima as per Hindu lunar calendar and this year it falls on October 5.
"Greetings on Valmiki Jayanti. A great sage and master litterateur, his rich ideals and works guide generations. Valmiki Jayanti Par Shubhkamanayen", the Prime Minister said.

Many Indians celebrate Valmiki Jayanti in city streets by organizing colourful religious processions and worshipping him. Devotees recite portions of his epic poetry in temples. Some devotees treat him as God or Bhagawana and have created temples that are specifically dedicated to him.  Special prayer meetings are held in the temples of Bhagawana Valmiki and food served to the poor.

Also known as Maharishi Valmiki, he is regarded as an Adi Kavi to have initiated the art of writing Sanskrit verses for the first time. His epic Ramayana consists of 24,000 verses.

It is said that Valmiki gave shelter to Devi Sita in his hermitage on being disowned by Lord Rama. Kusha and Lava, the twin sons of Lord Rama and Devi Sita were born in his hermitage. Valmiki taught Ramayana to both twins who could sing it in perfect rhyme.
