The Indian National Congress in a tweet stated, "Sardar Vallabhai Patel, known as 'Iron Man of India', was the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of independent India. A stalwart of the Congress Party he valiantly fought the British & worked tirelessly to unite the country. We salute his valour and honour him today."

Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950), also called the 'iron man of India', is known for his contribution in freedom struggle  and the merger of small princely states into India as a nation.

Gujarat government has directed the schools and colleges to install replicas of the Statue of Unity on December 15 to mark Sardar Patel's Punya Tithi and district collectors and municipal commissioners have asked to ensure it. Earlier, an Ekta Yatra was organised to pay tributes to the leader ahead of the inauguration of the Statue of Unity.

Here are three of his famous quotes.

-In a domestic Government unity and co-operation are essential requisites.

-No distinctions of caste and creed should hamper us. All are the sons and daughters of India. We should all love our country and build our destiny on mutual love and help.

-We have to shed mutual bickering, shed the difference of being high or low and develop the sense of equality and banish untouchability. We have to restore the conditions of Swaraj prevalent prior to British rule. We have to live like the children of the same father.
