National Conference on 'Down Syndrome' held in New Delhi
A national conference on 'Down syndrome' was organised by the National Trust under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in New Delhi on Monday to seek commitments of various stakeholders and increasing their awareness about the disability, said an official release.

The objective of the conference was to provide excellent opportunities to the parents to obtain information about latest development in education and skilling and inclusive living of persons with Down syndrome. Moreover, Assessment/Screening sessions were also conducted for the children with Down syndrome.

The conference was marked by panel discussion; question-answer session; presentations on topics, and information dissemination of courses on Down's syndrome. A book entitled "Twilights Children" based on the lives of person suffering from Down syndrome was released on the occasion. The conference brought intellectuals from all walks of life on one platform to spur ideas and channelized knowledge on Down syndrome which was very beneficial to enable a positive change in the people with Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome and their parents were invited to share their inspirational stories, the release stated.

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition associated with intellectual and learning disabilities. Delayed development and behavioural problems are often reported in children with it. The conference aimed at seeking commitments of various stakeholders and increasing their awareness about Down syndrome.

The National Trust, as a statutory body, works for the Welfare of Persons with autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities and has been running various schemes and programmes for the welfare of these persons with disabilities as well as organizing various workshops, seminars and conferences on these disabilities and the capabilities of such persons.

According to medical science, people with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome resulting into a range of issues that affect you both mentally and physically. It is a lifelong condition which can't be cured. However, with right care early on and therapeutic inputs can make a big difference in helping him live a full and meaningful life.

Since, Down syndrome has varied effects, and it's very different for each child. With individualized education programmes a few children having Down syndrome could be helped to grow up to live almost entirely on their own, while others will need more care at home along with education therapy in schools, it is said.
