The United States presidential nominating conventions are held after every four years. All the political parties who are going to nominate their candidates in the upcoming presidential elections will be organizing this national convention to select the party's nominee.
The national convention cycle starts with the 'call to convention' which is issued 18 months before the convention. This is a kind of invitation to all the parties to select their presidential nominees. The call of convention also consists of the rules for the process of nomination and the number of delegates (the voting representatives) to be awarded. Each party sets its own rules and formats for participation in the national convention.
The republican national convention of 2012 was held at the Tampa Bay Forum from 27th to 30th August. The whole event is organized by the Committee on Arrangements (COA), which is a part of Republican National Committee (RNC). The convention hosts the delegates and the alternate delegates from all the fifty states, five territories and other districts of Columbia. The convention also includes accredited media, global audience and other VIPs, as per the website gopconvention2012.
The democratic national convention of 2012 was held in Charlotte, North Carolina from September 4 to September 6. Like the Republican National convention, the democratic national convention also hosts delegates from fifty states and five territories. The conviction marks the final end of the primary elections.
The main purpose of the presidential national convention is to officially announce the party candidate to the public, and to announce the policy platform of the party. There are many other purposes of the national convention but the above mentioned are the two important ones.
The convention committee prepare the reports for the conventions based on the delegates credentials, party platform and rules of procedures. The Permanent Organization Committee selects the convention officers. The credentials of the delegates are given based on the conventions of both the parties. One of the final tasks of the convention is the selection of a vice president running partner.
