National Pharmacy Week (NPW) was observed various medical colleges, nursing institutes and hospitals of Jaipur in the third week of December. The main event was held Mahatma Gandhi Medical College at Sitapura with the theme "Pharmacist: A Healthcare Professional". The major focus of the event was to create awareness among people, healthcare providers and the medical authorities, about the theme in specific and about the pharmacy profession and role of pharmacist in general.
The Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) has been celebrating the National Pharmacy Week every year during the third week of November. The IPA is the premier professional association of pharmacists in India, with a member base of over 10,000, spread across the country. This year, it was the 52nd National Pharmacy Week (NPW) that was observed across India.
According to IPA, there is a need to strengthen the role of pharmacists in India for better healthcare services to the patients. The association has urged centre to take immediate action to make the presence of pharmacist essential for dispensing medicines.
During NWP, the 65th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress, (IPC) was held in Delhi. A resolution was passed urging the centre to implement Drugs and Cosmetics (D&C) Act and Pharmacy Act uniformly throughout the country.
The Indian Pharmacists Association (IPA) has been advocating for course of BSc (community health) and has written to the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to intervene in the matter of approval of the course and feels that with an upgradation course, pharmacists can take over the task of offering over the counter (OTC) drugs in rural area.
