National Sports Day celebrated across India
The National Sports Day was celebrated on August 29 across the country with sporting events and honouring sports persons and their trainers. In Delhi, the day was celebrated by organising friendly matches between different Indian hockey teams at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
President of India Pranab Mukherjee gave away the awards to outstanding sports personalities and those who excelled in adventure activities. The National Sports & Adventure Awards were presented at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the morning.

The most prestigious sports award 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratn Award' was conferred on P.V. Sindhu (Badminton); Dipa Karmakar (Gymnastics); Jitu Rai (Shooting) and Sakshi Malik (WrestlinG) by the President Mukherjee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his message stated, "On National Sports Day I congratulate all sports lovers across India and hope sports and sportsmanship will always shine in our society."

On the eve of National Sports Day, PM Modi hosted sportspersons who have represented India at the recently concluded Rio Olympics at his Race Course Road residence. He also met the Dhyan Chand awardees, Dronacharya awardees and Tenzing Norgay awardees.

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29 every year to mark the birthday of Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player who won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936.
