Nations across the globe gear up for International Day of Yoga, Indian PM Modi thanks enthusiasts
The UN recognised International Day of Yoga (IDG) is celebrated annually on June 21 since its inception in 2015, after it was proposed by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN Address in 2014.

This year, India has geared up much ahead of the day of observance and many events to popularise yoga have been held by many spiritual leaders and yoga teachers in many cities. There are reported news stories about the events to be held in many countries on June 21 this year.

On June 19, two days ahead of the International Yoga Day, PM Modi thanked nations across the globe for their enthusiasm and support to celebrate the ancient Indian discipline of yoga. In his Twitter account post, he added that yoga was so much more than just physical exercise which helped in achieving a sense of clarity of mind.

It may be recalled that in his address in the UN, Modi had said, "Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. This tradition is 5000 years old. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being."

In India, this year, the ministry of AYUSH released a letter to all government departments stating that "the government of India has decided to take forward the momentum created by International Day of Yoga, 2015 with greater and more active participation of youth during the current year celebrations."

The ministry will organize an event titled "The National Event of Mass Yoga Demonstration" at Chandigarh on June 21, which will be attended by the Indian Prime Minister, it has been notified.

Furthermore, India's Permanent Mission to the UN will be organizing celebrations at the United Nations on June 20 and 21. A special event titled "Conversation with Yoga Masters – Yoga for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" is the centrepiece. The Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru will be the main speaker at the event.
