This may be the personal opinion of Swaraj, but if we ponder over this issue seriously, it is not a half truth. Undoubtedly, in this election too, no party is in a position of getting a majority. There will surely be another Hung Parliament. When asked whether the NDA would be able to form a government on its own given the current political state of affairs, she responded, “I am not sure if the even NDA will get a majority on its own”. She added, “Despite this, if NDA emerges as the single largest coalition then, with post-poll alliances, we will be able to form a government.” But this truthful answer of Swaraj before the media was contrary to the claims of some leaders of BJP.
The statement of Sushma Swaraj had party heavyweights in New Delhi running for cover. BJP spokesman Siddharth Nath Singh, left to face a bombardment of queries from the media, claimed, “We are convinced that Advaniji will be the next prime minister”.
According to some senior leaders, BJP will fight strongly and despite the fact that its graph is rising, the Congress’ and UPA’s graphs are speedily coming down. As per some senior leader of BJP, all its leaders are confident of Advani becoming the prime minister. At this point in time, with the UPA’s allies abandoning the Congress, the BJP was confident of emerging as the single largest party. In this connection, former party president M. Venkaiah Naidu had gone on record claiming the BJP would get over 200 seats in this election.
Sushma Swaraj’s remarks come at a time when the BJP-led NDA has unleashed a major election propaganda. Hence, most of BJP leaders are claiming ignorance of Sushma’s remarks. Reacting to Swaraj’s realistic observation, a senior BJP functionary felt the top leadership has to be cautious in making statements since nothing can be predicted in this election and we can’t afford to go the polls with demoralised cadre.
Swaraj, however, did say she was confident that BJP would get more seats than the Congress, unlike in 2004 when the latter had outstripped the former by seven seats. Swaraj is contesting from Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh. State BJP sources, however, admitted that she had already emerged as an independent centre of power in the state and would only get stronger once she was formally elected, and that this wasn’t to everybody’s liking.
However, it is clear that like other leaders who are habitual of contesting from different places rather than their domicile constituency, Sushma Swaraj will also not do anything for the area from where she is contesting. So it is high time for the people of Vidisha who think twice before casting their votes for anybody. Development should be their main criteria for asking or demanding votes from them, irrespective of the party the candidate belongs to.
