NE Helpline condemns the molestation of Guwahati girl
Condemning the mob molestation of a Guwahati girl by a gang of around 20 people, North East Support Centre and Helpline has demanded immediate action against the culprits.

NORTH EAST Support Centre and Helpline condemned the mob molestation of 17-year-old girl in Guwahati. Tarun Gogoi Government must act before Guwahati becomes rape metropolitan city of the region, it demanded.

According to a source reaching to NE Helpline, the incident happened when a student of Class XI was returning home on July 9; a mob numbering around 20 attacked the girl and outraged her modesty. The girl continued to suffer for 30 minutes before Police came to the spot. The law enforcing agencies of Assam failed to arrest the culprits until the pressure was mounted through media. “The delay in taking action against the culprits will encourage the perpetrators to continue to commit such crimes in future,” it said in a statement.

The Guwahati city has witnessed another ugly street stripping of a tribal woman during protest procession on 24 November 2007. The local businessmen chased the protestors. They stripped off a woman protestor on Guwahati street and kicked on her belly too, the press release recalled.

North East Support Centre and Helpline expressed the deep concern about the safety of women in the state. According to National Crime Records Bureau, the state of Assam has witnessed third highest number of crimes against women.

North East Support Centre & Helpline is a combined initiative of various human rights activists, social workers, students, journalists, and lawyers seeking to prevent harassment and abuses meted out to women, North East People, and tribal communities of different states.

it has to be termed as one of the embarrassing moments in our Indian society. What has happened to the land where M. Gandhi once used to reside?

Its a national shame. The PMO or Home ministry should get involved and pressurise the state govt to bring the guilty to law.

I did not understand what actually was happening. Who was shooting the video - one of the culprits or a reporter? Why were there so many onlookers? Why couldn't anybody react? All the miscreants looked like local boys not professional Goondas - had the onlookers reacted sharply, the incident could have been avoided.
