In a bid to recognize the achievements of the sports personnel from the North-East Region, North East Council recently constituted the NEC Chairman's Sports Award for Excellency.

IN A bid to recognise the achievements of the sports personnel from the North-East Region, North East Council recently constituted the NEC Chairman’s Sports Award for Excellency. Union Minister of Doner B.K Handique will attend the 60th Plenary NEC meet where the cash reward will be given.

Under this initiative, the cash award is to be given to the medalist from the region on the 16th of this month in New Delhi. Twenty sports events have been identified under this award.

An amount of Rs. 40 lakhs will be awarded to the gold medalist in Olympics and Rs. 10 lakhs in Asian and Commonwealth Games. Ten Commonwealth games medalists including tennis star Somdev Devvarman, archer Jayanta Talukdar will be awarded.

On the other hand boxer M.C Mary Kom, Somdev Devvarman among others will be felicitated as the Asian Games medal winners for the year 2010.

Sports and sports people require support from governments of north east states of the country. Giving cash awards like these will encourage sportspersons to enter their respective games with greater confidence.
