Need to make use of line artwork as pre-writing activity for first grade kids
In artwork, a line is a path traced by a moving point using a pencil point, a pen tip or a paintbrush. A line is the most essential element of all artwork. Most of the folk art is simple lines-based artwork.

All scripts are also line work, if one has to link language learning for developing alphabet writing skills, it could be beneficial to link writing with line artwork to include visual-smart children in the lessons. Recent research in neuroscience indicates that children's visual intelligence develops the fastest in early childhood and it should become the medium of learning alphabet and counting.

Line artwork and writing of alphabets and numbers can be linked easily by introducing simple line artwork of decorating outlines of various objects. Curved lines, wavy lines, U-shapes and S-shapes should be used first and then the zig-zag lines and straight lines of different kinds.

A seven hour work in line artwork should be taken up with kids before transition to writing of alphabets and numbers, informs my action research experience. This improves the hand-eye coordination, habit of properly holding the writing tool and shapes hand's fine-muscles for writing legibly. The line pattern-trains in decorating outlines can lead to perceptual learning of arithmetic in the form of pre-number activities by including the ideas of long line, short line, thin line, thick line, first line, another line, many lines, etc.

For drawing outlines to be decorated with lines, line-pattern and pattern trains use the outline drawings of (1) kids' hands; (2) kids' feet; (3) leaves; (4) flat utensils like spoon, knife, scissors, etc. (5) shoe soles, (6) pens, pencils, and (7) geometry box objects. During outline drawing help kids to hold the pencil or sketch pen properly.

Proper worksheets need to be developed to link visual intelligence with initial writing work by kids. For developing proper coordination between senses enough practice is required. Make kids to do work consciously and slowly so that they get attentive but never be judgmental on children during transitional work, rather provide learning support.
