Need to think beyond boundaries for effective management of disasters: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh
Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day National Level Conference on "Capacity Building of SDRFs-2017" that began May 6, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that since a disaster had no geographical and physical boundaries, we must think beyond boundaries for effective management of disasters.

At the conference being organised by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in which most states of the country are participating, Rajnath appealed to the states to modify and implement the best practices of other states in tackling disasters.

He said that the risks arising out of development shall also be taken into account and focus should not only be on mitigating the effects of disasters, stated an official press release.

Various sessions in the conference stressed the need of disaster preparedness and strengthening of SDRFs by specialised training and equipping with latest gadgets for prompt and timely response to disaster.

It was mentioned that India was among top five countries in the world which are vulnerable to various kinds of disasters viz floods, earthquake, cyclones and tsunami etc.

The conference would be discussing various issues pertaining to disaster preparedness & response, preparedness and Early Warning Service of State Disaster Response Force's (SDRF's).

It was stated that the digitalisation would benefit common people as well as agencies involved in disaster management. Also, various initiatives taken by the government of India for promoting the digitalisation were highlighted.

The role of social media tools in disaster management was discussed. The participants were briefed about multi-hazards' early warnings, new forecasting applications and modules for forecasting of cyclones, monsoon etc in India, various tools prominently being used by common people for disseminating early warnings, its benefits to common people & disaster managers as well as how these could be helpful to disaster manager and other stakeholders as per the release.
