Nelson Mandela laid to rest in his native village
Anti-apartheid hero and former president of South Africa Late Nelson Mandela (95) was buried in his home village Qunu on Sunday, December 15, after a funeral that had of a mix of the state honour and ancient tribal rituals with thousands of mourners present.

Mandela's flag-draped coffin was carried to his family burial plot in his native village of Qunu. His casket, transported to the tent at burial ground on a gun carriage and speakers delivered eulogies in honour of late leader.

Mandela's widow, Grace Machel and estranged wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, were dressed in black and sat next to the South African President Jacob Zuma in the tent, reported the media. After the ceremony in the tent, a small group of close relatives and some guests walked to a family grave site for a private burial.

After suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection, Mandela died on 5 December in Johannesburg, surrounded by his family. His death was announced by President Jacob Zuma with a national mourning period of ten days. The main event to honour Mandela was held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 10 December 2013 in which around 90 representatives of foreign states participated including the India president.

Mandela was a firm believer in democracy with exclusivity, accountability and freedom of speech. As a democratic socialist, Mandela had openly opposed to capitalism, private land-ownership and the power of big money.
