An existing Ammonia tank at the International Space Station which kept the laboratory on-board in cool conditions was disconnected on Tuesday (September 1) and a new one connected two days later.
TWO ASTRONAUTS from the Space shuttle Discovery, who are presently at the International Space Station successfully removed a large Ammonia tank wieghing 1,300 pounds on Tuesday (September 1).
The Ammonia tank maintains the temperature of International Space Station's laboratory, keeping it cool enough to ensure it is inhabitable. The spacemen, John “Danny” Olivas and Nicole Scott went on the job for more than six hour to complete the work.
The duo, working in the weightless conditions disconnected the big Ammonia tank and held it steady, so that a robotic arm could grab and than shift it. A new fully loaded tank was installed on the second spacewalk of the mission on Thursday (September 3) night in the same manner.
The old empty tanks will be brought back to earth aboard the Discovery shuttle later.
