New Delhi organizes walkathon for senior citizens on International Day of Older Persons
In New Delhi, a walkathon for older persons and senior citizens was organized to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons at Commonwealth Games Village Stadium on October 1 which was flagged by Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment.

The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) and Anugraha Organisation, said an official release.

Gehlot informed the gathering about the new programmes and schemes of the government for the welfare of senior citizens such as conferring 'Vayoshreshtha Samman' every year on the eminent senior citizens and institutions in many categories in recognition of their services towards the cause of the elderly persons and distribution of physical aids and assistive living devices, viz, wheel chair, hearing aids, spectacles, support sticks, etc.  to the older persons of below poverty line category.

It was informed that more than 55000 senior citizens have been benefited under various schemes. Some other officials said that 'the senior citizens should always be happy and healthy and they can stay healthy by regular morning walk and other means,' stated the release.
