New Delhi to celebrate Summer Solstice
Tuesday is summer solstice and the people of New Delhi are gearing up for the day with some fun thing. Jantar Mantar would be the venue for the occasion organised by SPACE, a NGO.

MARKING THE summer solstices of the year, New Delhi would be celebrating a Solar Fest on Tuesday. The longest day of the summer in the Northern Hemisphere would be celebrated by SPACE, an NGO by a number of activities.

A skit would be performed at the 18th observatory in Jantar Mantar, which would be followed by a public outreach. This fest is being called as ‘Khagol Mela.’

They made it official through a statement, which declared that the NGO was having these things on the longest day of summer. The statement also said, “At the June solstice, the earth is positioned in its orbit so that the North Pole is leaning 23-and-a-half degrees toward the sun. As seen from the earth, the sun is directly overhead at noon 23-and-a-half degrees north of the equator, at an imaginary line encircling the globe, known as the Tropic of Cancer. The sun's rays are directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer (the latitude line at 23.5° north, passing through Mexico, Saharan Africa, and India).”

The sun on Tuesday would rise in New Delhi at around 5:24 AM and would set at around 7:22 PM, giving almost 14 hours of sunlight. This is the day when the sun stands still and hence the name Solstice, which has a literal meaning. The meaning comes from Latin words ‘sol’ (sun) and ’sistere’ (to stand still).
