We are quite familiar with the symbols of American Dollar, Chinese Yuan, British Pound etc. but our very own Indian rupee was long deprived of a symbol.
WE ARE quite familiar with the symbols of American Dollar, Chinese Yuan, British Pound etc. but our very own Indian rupee was long deprived of a symbol. But now putting an end to the long wait, India has finally adopted a new symbol for the Rupee and has proudly joined the select club of countries which can boast of a unique symbol or identity for their currency.
The new symbol is recently approved by the Union Cabinet. This new symbol is a combination of both the ‘Devnagari Ra’ and the ‘Romanian capital R’ and also has two parallel lines crossing through the top. This bold new step to induct a symbol to it’s currency and join the elite group of countries, shows the robustness of our economy and at the same time a new era is heralded for the country. It’s worth noting that the symbol was designed by D Uday Kumar, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) postgraduate.
There were five short listed designs, but at last the design by Kumar managed to pave it’s way to the final selection. Currently Kumar is working with the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati. He says that the design is inspired by our Tricolour and also stated that that he wanted the design to represent our national flag. The design is a fantastic fusion of Indian and Roman letters: the Devnagari ‘Ra’ and the Roman capital R, to appeal Indian audience and International audience as well. Very shortly all new notes rolled out, will bear this symbol.
