New taxi norms: Now, Ola, Uber can charge surge pricing up to four times
Allowing surge pricing in taxis, the Centre has issued new guidelines for taxi operators. The new guidelines will allow aggregators such as Ola and Uber to charge surge pricing.

Cab aggregators will be allowed to charge a surge pricing of up to three times the minimum fare during the day and up to four times during the night (midnight to 5 am).

The service providers will need to receive an approval for the minimum fare submitted to the state transport departments and they will have the liberty to fix the cap.

As per the new norms, private vehicles will be allowed to be used as taxis by paying a fee and getting their permissions online.

The new price rules will cover vehicles that have been categorised as 'economy taxi' and are less than four meters in length. These cabs will also need to have an app-based metering system validated by an agency approved by the IT ministry.

Other than complying with the local fuel norms, the taxis will also need to display the registration number and driver's photo prominently besides setting up a call center for attending to SOS.

The guidelines have been framed by the transport ministry after consultation with taxi players and state & central government departments. The guidelines will now submitted to the Delhi High Court.
