Technology is double-edged sword. It?s allowing access of sensitive information to terrorists. Such information is beneficial or harmful depending on which side of the fence you are. The recent Mumbai terror attack is a case in point.
NEW TRENDS of media like internet, blogging, mobile in the 21st century has become the new weapons to spread terrorism. With the advancement of technology, more and more people are using the internet, blogging and sharing information as these new forms of media are working as weapons.
We use different search engines like Yahoo, Google, etc on the internet to access information. With the help of these search engines we may also capture ‘sensitive information’, which are a nation’s secret and could possibly impact its national security. Also, we may get detailed maps as well as architecture of particular place. The latest examples are related to the Mumbai terrorist attack on November 26, 2008.
In the Mumbai terror attack, all terrorists had access to detailed information regarding Mumbai, its famous and sensitive places, its security pattern, etc. Then they used different satellite and mobile phones to get in touch with their handlers sitting in Pakistan. Webcam and net chatting were the also the possible mode to stay in touch with their ’Aaka’ (head). Besides this, our responsible media persons played great role in the Mumbai blast. But what the media was giving in live telecasts was also being viewed in Pakistan. This, in turn, helped the handlers of the terrorists to guide and instruct them about their moves. The boon and bane of media was laid bare before us.
