PITTSBURGH STEELERS quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been suspended for six games without pay since he violated the NFL's personal conduct policy. The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell felt the step best for his personal and professional welfare.
The Steelers quarterback must also undergo a comprehensive behavioral evaluation. Upon review of progress before the start of the regular season, the suspension can be reduced to four months but could also be extended beyond six months upon failure to complete the program.
Roethlisberger led the Steelers to two Super Bowl titles in the past decade and is now under criminal charges after a woman accused him of raping her in a Milledgeville Georgia bar in March this year. The prosecutors decided last week that they could not prove that a crime had been committed.
However due to the suspension, Roethlisberger cannot attend any team off-season activity until the completes the evaluation. Roethlisberger will also miss games against the Falcons, Titans, Buccaneers, Ravens, Browns and Dolphins. Roethlisberger could stand to lose $473,000 for each game missed. The Steelers reportedly traded a seventh-round draft pick for Byron Leftwich on Tuesday.
In 2008, Roethlisberger signed an eight-year, $102 million contract with the Steelers which was the largest deal in franchise history. Roethlisberger could lose a small percentage of the signing bonus too.
