NGO-run school in Ajmer to attempt school-based reform to bring pedagogy and research to centre-stage
In a focus-group held at a school in Ajmer run by Bal Sansar Sanstha in which six teachers, a pedagogue and two school management functionaries participated, it was resolved to undertake the school-based reform through the inclusive strategy of multiple intelligences based instruction, micro-learning and classroom research through pedagogical experiments and lesson studies.

"We wish to turn our small school for children in the age group 3 to 11 years into an educational laboratory in which teachers don the role of researcher-teachers to keep their classroom processes dynamic through self-reflection and appeal to the learning styles of diverse children as proposed in the theory of multiple intelligences. We are aware that this would require teacher development and support system within the school for the reform to succeed since teachers' centrality for the effectiveness to implement new initiatives is important," said Dr. Priyamvada Singh, the chairperson the NGO.

According to the invited pedagogue, the curriculum would have to be reshaped in terms of daily learning segments and learning material would have to be developed to suit the learning process based on multiple intelligences or learning styles of diverse children for which on-job training and review system would have to put in place. For this, monthly two-day training workshops could be part the part of school-based reform.

The focus group recommended that the learning material should be in the form of worksheets to be used in the classroom itself as per the requirement of micro-leaning method  making use of multiple intelligences of children to impart learning experiences. These worksheets should replace the futile practice of writing conventional lesson plans.

It was agreed to hold a two-day school-based teacher workshop in the last week-end of August to initiate the reform for learning new teaching skills and preparing learning material for at least two-weeks. Also, the research work in the form of pedagogical experiments and lesson studies should be taken up with the help of an external research guide. However, to sustain research and reform, funds would be required for which the NGO is making efforts, but reform will be reform will be initiated with the existing resources.
